Aluminum Alloys in the Aerospace Industry

The aircraft and aerospace industries have long relied on aluminum alloys. Without the aluminum alloy used in the engine, the first plane could not take flight. A satellite can survive through our fiery outer atmosphere and into space because its main body is made of aluminum. Even today, NASA uses aluminum lithium hybrids on its cutting-edge Orion spacecraft.
Aluminum alloy is a vital material for both the manufacture of commercial aircraft and the construction of precision space shuttles. Aluminum alloy is most commonly used in fuselage, wing and support structure construction, which provides a series of benefits for aircraft and aerospace engineering.
Aluminum alloys for aerospace are used to deal with sub zero temperature conditions encountered in space freezing vacuum. On the other hand, the aluminum alloy used in aircraft structure has durability and corrosion resistance. The high stability of these alloys makes them very suitable for mechanical parts, which also benefits from the high conductivity of aluminum.
Aluminum alloy type:
Various types of aluminum alloys are available, and each aluminum alloy has unique characteristics and composition to meet specific application requirements.
Aluminum 2024 is mainly composed of copper and is usually used to deal with high strength weight ratio. Due to the high tension requirements of these components, 2024 aluminium  is most commonly used in the construction of wings and fuselages.
Aluminum 2014 is the second most popular alloy in aerospace engineering. This alloy is strong and durable. The only defect is that its corrosion resistance is not up to standard. Therefore, 2014 aluminium is usually used for the internal part of the aircraft rather than the external structure.

Aluminum 5052 is the strongest alloy in the non heat treatment category. This alloy has good flexibility and can form a series of configurations. 5052 aluminium also has the highest salt water corrosion resistance when used in marine applications.

Aluminum 6061 is one of the most commonly used alloys, especially those used by amateur and amateur aircraft manufacturers. It is usually used in the wing and fuselage of the aerospace industry.

Aluminum 7075 is mainly composed of zinc. It has been used in various aircraft parts since World War II. It is still a popular production alloy. Aluminum alloy 7075 has the same strength as steel and is easy to process.
